Lift Truck Battery Safety
The power to run electric forklifts is supplied by huge industrial batteries that need to be charged frequently and maintained properly. Safety measures should always be followed while someone connects the battery to the charger. It is really important to check fluid levels in the battery.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
It is important for workers working with a lift truck battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG comprise safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The best way to protect both clothes and skin from other residue or leaked acid is to put on an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging place must be an emergency eyewash post. The route to the post must not be obstructed and an injured worker must be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging place in 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger and battery must be at the same amperage. It must be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
While near a battery and charging area, open fire are not allowed. Do not permit things like for example lighters or matches to be used while someone is inspecting the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also has to be properly ventilated. The recharging process could cause fumes to be released. These fumes are both toxic and explosive.
